I'm looking to publish something from your collections, what steps do I need to take?
There are several things you'll need to do.
First, create your Special Collections Aeon account.
Next, identify which items you'd like to publish. If you want publication-quality images, you'll submit a request through Aeon to purchase scans.
Depending on the copyright status of the items, you'll need to identify the current rights holder for the materials and provide Special Collections with a signed authorization form.
You may need to perform a U.S. Copyright office search to determine who holds copyright on the items you are looking to publish and get their permission to use them. The WATCH File website can also be a helpful tool.
Once copyright has been cleared, the University will draft a licensing agreement upon proposed usage for you to sign. Once we have received a signed copy, we can then have our director sign off and release those images to you.
Publication licensing carries separate fees from scan requests, and are calculated based on proposed usage (print run, number of editions, circulation, etc.).
All requests for images and publications licensing are handled through the Aeon system. For more detailed information about this process, please visit our guide about Requesting Scans and Publication Licensing.
